We recently hosted a Serve Team Fair where church members were invited to explore the various Serving Teams we have around the church. Thank you to everyone who came, explored, and jumped in to a new serving role! We believe that these opportunities are a great way to meet people and serve God by serving others.
We love to hear your stories of how serving has influenced you— we want to highlight the experiences of our Serve Team members! This week’s story is of Joan and Marvin Gregory… it just might inspire you to get involved!
How long have you been attending Grace Chapel and what brought you here?
Marvin, myself and my three daughters started attending Grace Chapel about seven years ago. We previously attended First Presbyterian Church in Sharpsville for over 20 years but we all felt it was time for a change. We heard wonderful things about Grace Chapel, so we decided to give it a try. We have loved it here from the first day!
Why did you want to start serving here at the church? Marvin retired in December of 2018 and I retired in July of 2019. With our jobs, we were up at 5:00 am and in bed by 9:30 pm and we were busy. When we retired, I knew I was ready to get involved a little more with the church. Since our three daughters are all grown and on their own, we now have some free time, although we do watch our two adorable granddaughters one day a week. So, I dragged Marvin along with me to volunteer! Actually, he loves it as much as I do!
How would you describe your experience serving so far? Marvin and I have been helping about once a month in the café for over a year and now we’ve also joined Guest Services and the Backpack Packing program [at Hickory High School]. Marvin also serves on the Security Team. We have even convinced our daughter, Allysen, to help out with the Backpack Packing program on Wednesdays.
What have you gained from this volunteer opportunity? What would you say to others who might be considering getting involved on a serving team?
The word I would use to describe being involved with these serving teams is “joy”.
It brings so much joy to our hearts and lives to serve at Grace Chapel. The people that we serve with are all so kind and helpful. We would tell everyone that if you are considering getting involved on a serving team, just jump in! You get back so much joy and your heart will feel so full.
